This violin has been crafted using high quality tone woods with excellent properties to provide an instrument that will give the best performance. The spruce and maple has been air dried for over 12 years prior to use, ensuring a quality sound that will endure. The violin is finished in a nicely antiqued varnish. The tone is already excellent for a new violin and after a few months playing you will have a beautiful sounding instrument with a wonderful appearance that will be both rewarding and pleasurable to play.

Unlike many companies we make no fanciful claims about our violins being ‘professional’ or ‘soloist’ standard – no soloist or professional musician would ever use a violin of this price bracket – that is the simple reality of it. However, we will say that in the under £1000 price bracket we have not found any violins that are better.

About Our Tonewoods:

Nearly every new violin advertised for sale these days comes with a claim that the wood is 10 – 20 years old at least. The inside story from those in the know is very different. The truth is that probably fewer than 10% of these instruments have wood that is 5 years old.  Pressures of time and economy on price mean that an ever increasing number of makers are using ‘Green Wood’, less than a year old. Not only do violins made from green wood lack the tonal qualities of those constructed of mature wood but there is a high risk that they will crack, joints will come apart or the neck will warp. Our makers have a stockpile of wood sufficient for 5 years and the instruments that we select from them are made from wood guaranteed to have been air dried for at least 14 years. Forced drying, using heat to speed up the process makes the wood brittle.

Plate Thicknessing:

The tone and projection of a violin is critically dependent on both correct thickness on the plates (belly and back) of the violin. Too thick and they will be stronger but lack the flexibility to vibrate freely. Too thin and the violin will be fragile under the immense pressure of the strings and although it may initially appear to have a good sound, over the course of a couple of years it will lose its tone. Our makers have carefully studied many highest quality instruments, especially the very best 17th century Cremonese (Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesu, Amati), and have developed a careful understanding of the correct plate thickness and distribution to give optimal results over the long term. The plates of these violins are on average around 5% thicker than that commonly seen on many new violins, and their tone will only ever improve with the ripening of time.

About the ‘Viotti, ex-Bruce’ Strad 1709 violin.

The Viotti, ex-Bruce is one of two 1709 Stradivari instruments that owned by the legendary virtuoso violinist Giovanni Battiste Viotti (1755-1824), together with another from 1712. Having two Stradivarius violins dated 1709 it later caused much confusion. This one was Viotti’s principal violin, being used in the majority of concert performances. The great English violinist Marie Hall (1884-1956), for whom Ralph Vaughan Williams dedicated his gorgeous “Lark Ascending” composition, believed that she had purchased Viotti’s principal Strad and it wasn’t until much later that the mystery of the two violins was resolved and for the sake of future clarity the Viotti 1709 Stradivarius that had belonged to Marie Hall was renamed after her, whilst his principal violin retained the Viotti label, which was appended with the tag ‘ex-Bruce’ after its then current owner, J.F.L. Bruce.

Viotti was one of the greatest violinists of the period, who did much to advance playing technique on the instrument, and was a great advocate of Stradivari’s violins, doing a great deal to establish them as ‘The Violin’. He toured much of Europe, wooing great crowds with his virtuosity everywhere that he went – and amongst them the aristocracy and royalty. He had a reputation for endearing himself to young ladies of high position and amongst them was Catherine the Great of Russia, and legend has it that Viotti received this violin from her as a “token of love”.

Viotti composed a total of 29 violin concertos, of which his 22nd is most well known.

Viotti is said to have been a great influence on Beethoven and Rudolphe Kreutzer, as well as indirectly though his pupil Duranowski on the great Niccolo Paganini.

The Viotti ex-Bruce 1709 Stradivarius violin is been in the hands of the Royal Academy of Music, London since 2005 who acquired for £3.5million from the Bruce family through funds provided by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax, as well as the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the National Art Collection Fund, and many private donors, including the violin dealers J & A Beare.
